We have two doctors with a special interest in Sports Medicine. Dr Fran Bradshaw has a Certificate in Sports Medicine from the University of Sydney. Dr Bob Shirlaw has been the team doctor for a number of state netball teams and provided medical care for the cycling teams with whom he rides.
Exercise is an important tool for promoting health and managing disease. For example aerobic exercise can assist with weight management and prevent cardiovascular disease. Resistance training can prevent osteoporosis and reduce the likelihood of injury. Back strengthening can be used to manage back pain.
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Referral (RICER) – these are essential elements for a quick recovery from injury.
REST - Reduces further damage. Avoid as much movement as possible and Don’t put any weight on the injured part of the body. ICE - Apply a cold pack to the injury for 20 minutes every 2 hours for the first 48 -72 hours. Do not apply ice or cold packs directly to the skin. COMPRESSION - Apply a compression bandage covering the injured area as well as the areas above and below. Check the bandage is not too tight. ELEVATION - Elevate the injured area to stop bleeding and swelling. Place the injured area on a pillow for comfort and support. REFERRAL - Refer the injured person to a qualified professional such as a doctor or physiotherapist for precise diagnosis, ongoing care and treatment. A full recovery is then more likely. Always see your doctor if the wound is deep, bleeding or shows signs of infection like reddening, swelling or warmth.
Lacerations and soft tissue injuries can be managed in our 2 bed treatment room. Our doctors can refer for X-Ray’s, scans or MRI where indicated. Fractures and more serious injury will be referred to hospital or private specialist for management.
EXERCISE INDUCED ASTHMA
Exercise can trigger asthma symptoms such as wheezing, cough, tight chest or shortness of breath. Our asthma nurses can perform spirometer to assess lung function. If indicated, your doctor can prescribe medication to manage symptoms.
Our doctors can refer you to allied health practitioners. For example physiotherapists can assist with strengthening and rehabilitation. Exercise physiologists can provide training programmes to assist with weight management.
Chronic injury can become an issue of pain management. This involves a multidisciplinary approach including a Physiotherapist for strengthening, a Psychologist for adjustment to injury and pain medication. Please note that due to their addictive nature the doctors in this practice do NOT prescribe schedule 8 narcotic drugs. If the chronic condition lasts over 6 months and becomes complex the patient may be eligible for a GP Pain Management Plan and Team Care Arrangement which provides a Medicare rebate for up to 5 allied health sessions in 12 months. These plans are not available for managing acute injuries.
